BCBA Requirements: How to Become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst

The path to becoming a BCBA, stage by stage and in order — with the exact, changing numbers pointed to the BACB, where they stay current.

The path

The Five Stages, In Order

Becoming a BCBA runs through five stages in a fixed order, and each one gates the next: (1) a qualifying graduate degree, (2) behavior-analytic coursework, (3) supervised fieldwork, (4) the BCBA exam, and (5) ongoing certification once you pass. You cannot reorder them. Fieldwork is credited alongside or after the coursework, and Pearson VUE will not seat you for the exam until your degree, coursework and fieldwork are verified. Treat the path like a pipeline: clear one gate cleanly before you load the next.

What follows is the shape of each stage — what it is and how it connects to the one after it. It is deliberately not a table of credit hours, fieldwork totals or fees. Those numbers are set by the BACB, they are being revised for an announced 2027 update, and a stale figure copied from a forum is exactly how a candidate wastes a year on the wrong program. For every exact requirement below, the current answer lives with the BACB (bacb.com) — check it there before you spend money or time.

  1. A qualifying graduate degree

The path opens with a master's-level or higher degree that the BACB accepts. Not every graduate degree counts — the acceptable fields and program types are defined by the board, not by a school's marketing copy. Before you enrol, confirm that the specific program satisfies the current degree standard. That verification belongs to the BACB, whose eligibility criteria are the only ones that decide your file.

  2. Behavior-analytic coursework

On top of the degree you complete graduate coursework in behavior analysis, delivered through a verified course sequence or an accepted equivalent. The number of courses, the credit load and the exact content areas are BACB-defined and are among the items changing in 2027 — so treat any credit count you read secondhand as already out of date. Pull the current coursework requirement straight from the BACB.

  3. Supervised fieldwork

You then log supervised fieldwork: real, observed behavior-analytic work under a qualified supervisor, accumulated over time and documented as you go. Fieldwork carries a required total, a supervision ratio and rules about what counts — all board-set and periodically revised. Rather than chase an hour figure here, build to the current standard published by the BACB and keep contemporaneous records. Reconstructing hours after the fact is where candidates quietly lose months.

  4. Pass the BCBA exam

With the degree, coursework and fieldwork verified, you apply and sit the BCBA exam through Pearson VUE. This is the gate this site is built around — and, importantly, it is stage four, not stage one. The exam does not teach you the material; it measures the judgment your coursework and fieldwork already built, under a four-hour clock. The format and how to prepare for it are covered in the next section.

  5. Maintain your certification

Passing is not the finish line. The credential runs on a recertification cycle with continuing-education and ethics obligations, and it lapses if you let the cycle slip. The exact CEU counts, cycle length and renewal fees are board-set and change, so confirm your maintenance obligations with the BACB the week you certify — not the year it renews.

Stage 4

Where the Exam Sits in the Path

The BCBA exam is stage four, reached only after the degree, coursework and fieldwork are on file. On the 6th edition it is 185 items — 175 scored plus 10 unscored pilot items — delivered in four hours on a computer at a Pearson VUE center, every question multiple choice with four options. Content follows the TCO 6th edition weights, and two domains carry the most: Concepts & Principles (B) and Behavior-Change Procedures (G), at 14% each.

Four hours across 185 items is a budget of roughly 78 seconds per question. That is the number this site trains against. Answer the items you know first to bank time, mark and skip anything that stalls you past its budget, and return with your remaining minutes rather than bleeding the clock on a single hard item. Pace is a skill you rehearse, not a plan you write on test morning.

Stage 5

Staying Certified After You Pass

Certification is a state you maintain, not a box you tick once. After you pass, the credential renews on a recurring cycle that asks for continuing education, adherence to the ethics code, and a renewal fee each period. Miss the cycle and the credential can lapse, which is a far harder hole to climb out of than staying current would have been.

The specifics — how many CEUs, how long the cycle runs, how much renewal costs, and what share of your CEUs must be in ethics — are all BACB-set and subject to change. Do not carry a number in your head from the year you certified. Read your maintenance requirements from the BACB at the start of each cycle and calendar the deadlines the way you would calendar the exam.

BCBA Requirements: FAQ

How long does it take to become a BCBA?
It depends on the stage you are on and how fast you clear each one — the graduate degree, the behavior-analytic coursework and the supervised fieldwork each take real time, and fieldwork in particular is paced by how many supervised hours you can log. There is no single fixed timeline, and the required totals are set by the BACB, so plan against the current standard on bacb.com rather than a number from a forum.
Does any master's degree qualify?
No. The degree has to meet the BACB's specific eligibility criteria, and the behavior-analytic coursework is a separate requirement on top of the degree. Confirm both with the BACB before you enrol in any program.
Can I take the BCBA exam before I finish my fieldwork?
No. The exam is stage four: you apply and sit it through Pearson VUE only after your degree, coursework and fieldwork are verified. The exam is 185 items over four hours on the 6th edition — the format is fixed, but your eligibility to sit it is gated by the earlier stages.
Where do I get the exact hour, credit and fee numbers?
From the BACB directly, at bacb.com. Fieldwork hour totals, coursework credits, degree criteria and fees all change — an update is announced for 2027 — so this page describes the shape of each stage and sends you to the official source for the current figures. That is the only place the numbers are guaranteed current.
